How does hyaluronic acid work?

Hyaluronic acid is a moisturising component which is naturally present in the skin, cartilage and other connective tissue of the body. Also known as glycosaminoglycan, it is part of the extracellular matrix along with proteins which support the skin, including collagen and elastin.

This water-absorbing molecule works a bit like a sponge and can retain up to 1000 times its weight in water. With a life expectancy of 24 hours, it is constantly renewed. After you turn 20, the quality, quantity and concentration of the hyaluronic acid which your body produces begins to drop. By the age of 50, the epidermis has lost an estimated 50% of its original hyaluronic acid, causing the skin to sag and the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Why is hyaluronic acid the new anti-ageing ingredient in cosmetics?

Moisturising, antioxidant and restorative properties

Discovered in the 1930s, the use of hyaluronic acid was developed in the 1970s for procedures on the eyes. Its healing properties have been studied since the 1980s. These studies also found interesting anti-ageing properties, due to its involvement in the production of collagen and its ability to retain large amounts of water. Since the early 2000s, it has been used in cosmetic surgery to treat wrinkles

The success of hyaluronic acid injections soon led to a new trend in cosmetics. The celebrated molecule is included in serums and anti-ageing creams, working to tackle signs of ageing without the need for cosmetic surgery. Today, the cutaneous application of hyaluronic acid is recognised for its powerful moisturising properties and its ability to boost collagen production naturally.

A HARMLESS MOLECULE IN COSMETICS:

Hyaluronic acid is safe for use in moisturising and anti-ageing cosmetic products as it only acts on the skin’s surface

Natural active ingredient or synthetic molecule: two different manufacturing processes

Produced by biotechnology, natural hyaluronic acid is of plant origin. It is produced naturally by certain micro-organisms in a laboratory-controlled wheat fermentation process. Pure plant-derived hyaluronic acid is identical to the molecule produced by the body. Solvent-free, it ensures optimal absorption.

Synthetic hyaluronic acid can be obtained by means of a chemical process. Extracted from roosters’ combs, it is processed with solvents before being refined. This method is less common nowadays because the synthetic active ingredient is poorly absorbed by the skin.
