What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule derived from the carbohydrate family that is naturally present in the skin and in all body tissues. Its role is to lubricate the joints and to keep the skin tissues well hydrated, giving them support and volume. It is recognised as the most hydrating active ingredient!

Hyaluronic acid is a kind of sponge that has the capacity to absorb 1000 times its weight in water. It thus ensures the lasting hydration of the skin with a plumping and filling effect.

Why is hyaluronic acid so important for my skin?

By boosting the production of collagen by fibroblasts and reinforcing the epidermal barrier, Hyaluronic Acid is a safe bet for the beauty of all skin types.

1. It ensures optimal hydration and is suitable for all skin types

As the skin ages, its water retention capacity is affected because its structure is less supplied with collagen and elastin. The structure of the skin is depleted in hyaluronic acid, which ensures the hydration of collagen by forming a sort of "cement".

When this skin barrier is altered, the water present in the dermis evaporates, the skin becomes fragile and inevitably dries out. When the skin is dehydrated, it means that the hydrolipidic film is compromised. The skin is then more sensitive to free radicals and can no longer defend itself properly.
So, by nourishing the epidermis, Hyaluronic Acid helps to restore and strengthen our protective shields for hydrated, luminous and healthy skin.

2. As the skin ages, it stimulates collagen production

At the first signs of ageing, visible changes can be observed on the surface: a dull complexion, drawn features or dehydration lines. Then, the skin's metabolism slows down, resulting in a loss of firmness, marked wrinkles and a loss of radiance. The more the years go by, the more vulnerable the skin is to external aggressions. With age, skin ageing accelerates, the skin becomes more fragile and loses density and volume. The contours of the face sag, wrinkles deepen and the skin loses its radiance.

The addition of hyaluronic acid allows the skin to regain sufficient hydration to ensure long-lasting radiance while stimulating the natural production of collagen.

Hyaluronic acid is therefore very effective in preventing and treating the visible signs of skin ageing. However, not all hyaluronic acids are equal...

How to recognize an effective Hyaluronic Acid?

Two nuances must be made to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of a hyaluronic acid: its extraction method and its active concentration in a formula.

1. The mode of extraction

A distinction is made between synthetic hyaluronic acid and plant hyaluronic acid. While synthetic hyaluronic acid is poorly absorbed by the skin and is obtained with chemical solvents, pure plant hyaluronic acid is obtained from the bio-fermentation of wheat, without solvents, and is optimally absorbed by the skin.

Good to know: plant hyaluronic acid is better absorbed by the skin than synthetic hyaluronic acids

2. The concentration of hyaluronic acid

It is also important to check the concentration of hyaluronic acid in the product formula to ensure that the treatment is as effective as possible.

For example: 10% Hyaluronic Acid Solution at 1% is actually 0.1% pure hyaluronic acid in the formula, which is very low.

PATYKA's Advanced Research Fundamental Plumping Serum contains the highest concentration of Hyaluronic Acid on the market for an immediate plumping, filling and smoothing effect: 2% of Pure Hyaluronic Acid.

3. Molecular weight

For optimal effectiveness, 3 molecular weights act at the heart of the formula on the three layers of the skin:

- High molecular weight: It forms a protective film that retains water in the skin surface. Its role is to plump up the skin, smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines for an immediate tightening and smoothing effect. It is suitable for skin that is not yet marked by the signs of ageing.

- Intermediate molecular weight: Fills and plumps for prolonged hydration. By penetrating deeper into the epidermis, it harmonizes the oval of your face. Thanks to its intense volumising effect, it reduces the first wrinkles and certain imperfections.

- Low molecular weight: it stimulates the production of collagen in depth to prevent skin slackening. Due to its small size, this molecule penetrates the different layers of the epidermis to reactivate the skin's microcirculation. The skin is firmer and highly hydrated.

In conclusion

By the age of 50, the skin has already lost 50% of its hyaluronic acid! To support your skin's natural production, opt for quality skin care products that combine several molecular weights of pure, natural, plant-based hyaluronic acid in the highest possible concentration.

The little extras tips !

To reinforce the action of your skin care products, opt for a diet rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits, acerola, camu-camu) which is the precursor vitamin for the natural production of collagen, and in essential fatty acids (wild salmon, sardines and small oily fish, oleaginous plants) in order to nourish the tissues in depth, offering elasticity and comfort to the skin.

Finally, a healthy lifestyle is the key to beautiful, long-lasting moisturised skin: limit your alcohol consumption, avoid smoking and get a good night's sleep to regenerate.
