Where does vegetable salicylic acid come from?
Salicylic acid is a chemical molecule produced by the plant world. It is different from fruit acids (AHA), since salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA): an aromatic organic compound, mostly synthesized by the bark of Black or White Willow. Studied for nearly 200 years in various medical applications, it has become an active ingredient of choice in cosmetic formulations: it stimulates skin renewal, smoothes imperfections and helps the epidermis to make new skin.
Â
When was it discovered?
It was first extracted from willow bark in 1829 by a French pharmacist, Pierre-Joseph Leroux. This first extract was isolated and then used as a medicine (before the appearance of aspirin and paracetamol, salicylic acid was notably used to reduce fever), before being commonly used later in herbal medicine, in the form of a concentrated balm for local application.
How do you recognize him?
As a pure active ingredient, it is colourless and has no particular odour.
In cosmetics, salicylic acid can also be used against acne thanks to its peeling effect, as a preservative or antiseptic. PATYKA Advanced Research uses vegetable salicylic acid Black Willow and Wintergreen bark extracta small shrub with natural anti-inflammatory properties.
What are the benefits of vegetable salicylic acid?
The action of salicylic acid on skin and complexion
Salicylic acid is ideal for improving the appearance of the skin. It unclogs pores by reducing excess sebum and removing dead cells responsible for dull complexion. It helps reduce skin inflammation, soothes the skin and stimulates cell renewal. Finally, it increases collagen synthesis and stimulates circulation, making it an excellent anti-ageing active ingredient.
Salicylic acid tightens, firms, soothes and moisturizes the skin. With it, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced, skin texture is refined, the complexion is lightened and the skin texture is more supple.
Its action is also beneficial for skin spots age or damage caused by prolonged exposure to the sun, since salicylic acid possesses lightening properties.
Salicylic acid also targets existing blackheads and acne pimples, preventing them from developing further through its antibacterial action and reducing pore size.
Finally, salicylic acid has ultra-targeted exfoliating properties. By simple contact with the skin, salicylic acid helps remove dead cells from the stratum corneum of the epidermis by interacting with keratin. With no mechanical action, it promotes smoother, brighter and softer skin.
