What causes dark spots?
Brown spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, affect a large number of women. Regardless of skin tone or type, brown spots appear on the most exposed areas such as the face, back of the hands or décolleté and can appear at any age.
While the majority of them are the result of abusive sun exposure, others may be related to skin aging. But not all pigmentation spots are the same! So before treating them, it is essential to understand the pigmentation process of the skin.
It all starts with the melanocyte, the cell that produces melanin: this is the protective pigment that, depending on its type and concentration, determines the colour of the skin, hair and eyes.
Melanin is placed at the heart of the cells like a real shield and when the skin is exposed to the sun, the melanocyte reacts: it produces melanin and gives the tanned complexion that we love so much when the sunny days arrive. But the melanocyte is also a very fragile cell, which tends to go out of balance at the slightest disturbance (hormones at half-mast, periods of intense stress, skin inflammation). The result? The melanin just does what it wants, it occurs in an excessive way, and the pigmentary spots appear.
While these mostly surface around the age of 40, they can actually point their noses much earlier: pregnant women, for example, can see the famous pregnancy mask appear as early as the second trimester. Even if it is supposed to disappear within 6 months after giving birth, it sometimes becomes tougher and comes to the surface of the skin even without sun exposure.
Among the various causes of dark spots, remember that post-inflammatory spots can appear following skin damage (stubborn acne scars, burns, etc.).
Â
What do dark spots look like?
Dark spots are fairly even (except in the pregnancy mask, where they are asymmetrical). They range from light beige to dark brown, and are located in frequently exposed areas.
Like most pigment spots, they evolve in phases:
- The nascent stain, the one that appears when melanocytes in the lower layer of the epidermis produce excess melanin. This melanin rises to the surface and alters the uniformity of the skin, without causing spots visible to the naked eye.
- The installed stain, which appears when excess melanin reaches the upper layers of the epidermis. Little by little, the spots settle and become visible.
- The recurring stain, which is evidence of deranged melanocytes. Under the effect of a simple annoyance, the stain reappears at any time. Your skin is disturbed by a chronic micro-inflammatory phenomenon.
Once established, spots are difficult to get rid of, and they tend to reappear and multiply if you're not careful! One solution to keep them from appearing? Apply sunscreen daily, especially during the summer and on tropical vacations or ski trips.
Another solution is to use an anti-spot serum reinforced with specialized active ingredients to target every step of the pigment spot cycle.

Goji berries, the little red miracle berries from Asia, are one of the main active ingredients: they provide the Dark Spot Correcting Serum with concentrated antioxidants. They also stimulate cell renewal and help the skin to eliminate toxins.
PATYKA Advanced Research has developed an Exclusive Dark Spot Correcting Complex, combining sea fern (a brown algae sourced from the Atlantic coast of Europe) and oxyresveratrol (a powerful antioxidant molecule extracted from wild blackberries) to block the overproduction of melanin, lighten the skin, and control tyrosinase activity (tyrosinase is an enzyme responsible for skin pigmentation), central to the development of dark spots.
Two different forms of hyaluronic acid are incorporated into the serum (high molecular weight and medium molecular weight). They fill the skin with water to instantly moisturize and replump your epidermis.
Finally, fruit acids stimulate cell renewal, smoothing and brightening your complexion. This natural complex acts as a gentle exfoliating agent to smooth and brighten your complexion and stimulate cell renewal without damaging the skin or accentuating discoloration.
